Fern Dell is a favorite destination of ours in Griffith Park! Here we can take a leisurely stroll through the canopy of sycamore trees and appreciate the tranquil beauty. More than 50 varieties of ferns are said to exist here along a winding trail.

Architect Harry Hayden Whitely designed the Spanish Revival style house for Dr. B.C. Coleman in 1929. It is currently the home of actor Danny Bonaduce. The architect also designed the John M. Blank Residence at 1950 N. Edgemont Street (1928); the Captain Harry M. Rubey Residence (1920) on Commonwealth Avenue, the McGowan House for Film Director Robert F. McGowan located at 1928 N. Western Avenue (1929) and.a home for Ceramicist Laura F. Anderson on Edgemont Street in 1928.

Architect Mark Daniels designed the Mediterranean Revival style house for Film Director Victor Shertzinger in 1921. Shertzberger directed many films, beginning in the silent era, including the "Road" pictures, featuring Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour. Born in Pennsylvania, he studied music at Brown University and the University of Brussels. A well-known concert violist and symphony conductor, he got his start in the movie business by composing the score for the film, "Civilization" in 1916. By the time of his death in 1941, he had directed 87 films and written thirteen musical scores in addition to numerous screenplays.

Shertzinger lived the celebrity life to the hilt. He drove a Duesenberg, while his wife could be spotted in a chauffeur-driven Pierce Arrow. He was credited with bringing music to the silver screen, composing the first accompanying score for "The Tick Tock Man of Oz", followed by "Pretty Miss Smith", "If I Had You" and "My Daddy Knows". He later turned to directing; among his many stars were Dorothy Dalton, Pauline Fredrick and Mabel Normand.

One of Kesling's earliest commissions and one of his best. The home was built right after the success of his 'Model Home' in Silver Lake, which established the young architect-builder as a force in the Modernist Movement. It must have appeared on the outer edge of the avante-garde in the affluent Los Feliz of the time, when elegant homes of Spanish, Mediterranean and English Tudor design were most preferred. Resistance to this new 'machine' architecture was high; it took the speculators almost two years to sell the house after its completion.

The Johnstone House is located in Los Feliz on Lowry Road just north of Los Feliz Boulevard on the west side of the street.

Donna and I packed our bags and moved from Silver Lake to Los Feliz in November 2007. We were fortunate to relocate to a fantastic old Spanish Revival house, formerly the home of the Beaton Family of radio fame. William Beaton was President and Chairman of the Board of KIEV Radio 1961-1985 (his sons Fred and Ron took control of the station after his death). Shortly after moving in, Donna and I attended a New Year's Eve party in Silver Lake at the home of Dave Keitel and Shelley Marks (Silver Lake Reservoirs Conservancy). Tom LaBonge was among the guests that evening; as we shared about our move from Silver Lake to Los Feliz Tom inquired, "Where in Los Feliz?" After giving him our new address, he immediately replied, "Oh, you live in the Beaton House, I used to go swimming there as a child."

While we still have a great affection for Silver Lake, Los Feliz is our new home and we are really enjoying being on a "perpetual holiday"! Living at the foot of Griffith Park with its unspoiled trails and living in our dream home and appreciating the beautiful architecture as well as our neighbors has been a dream come true.

Walking the neighborhood, I plan on bringing my camera along as often as possible. I trust you will share my appreciation for Los Feliz in the pictures and stories about our community. Visit us regularly and enjoy the journey!

Modernist interpretation designed by Architect Roger Sherman, with landscape design by Russ Cletta. The house is currently (October 2011) on the market and listed for sale for $1,650,00.
This project illustrates how a multi-storey, "urban house"-type can be linked to its landscape setting in the spirit of the single-story mid-century houses that its owners sought to emulate. The 4-storey, 2-bedroom home is the result of a complete stem-to-stern remodel of an existing 2,500 sf residence, with the aim of opening up access to the exterior, and making it better suited to the unique living arrangements of its owners: the lowest level as a garage; the next as an office with its own entrance; a third as bedroom suite for an adult child; and the top level as a one-bedroom residence for the owners themselves. Access to each separate level is gained from the exterior, through a set of landscapes which climb up along the house on both front and back. Both culminate in a pool/garden at the top level, opened onto by the main living/dining area by means of a telescoping set of glass doors. This facilitates the easy flow of guests between inside and out, as well as natural ventilation, seldom necessitating the use of air conditioning despite the project’s location.

The house is located at 1937 Cedar Lodge Terrace in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Classic Spanish Revival home located in the Primrose Hill neighborhood of Silver Lake. Set back from the street on a gentle downslope, the home was built for the Farm Land and Development Company at a cost of $8600, a princely sum during the economic depression of the early 30's. The architect, Arthur C. Munson (1886-1969), had a long, distinguished career in Los Angeles. Among his other commissions were the F.L. Austin House in South Pasadena; the Raymond C. Brooks Residence in Claremont; the Long Beach Theatre Project and the E.T. Williams House in Los Angeles. With his partner Allen Kelly Ruoff, he designed the William J. Hubbard Residence in Wilshire Park in 1923 (honored as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 2006).

The architect designed approximately 24 homes in the Los Feliz and Hollywood neighborhoods during the 1920's, including John Phillip Law's "Castle" (1929). Certainly one of the more imposing homes in Silver Lake, this handsome Mediterranean residence sits on a lot of over 16,000 square feet and must have spectacular views of the lake. The architect was a favorite of the University of Southern California designing the Italian Romanesque Methodist Episcopal University Church (now United University Church) in 1931, the Hancock Foundation Building in 1939 and Kerckoff Hall in 1949. Johnson also had a hand in designing the Biegler Hall of Engineering (in cooperation with architects John and Donald Parkinson) in 1939.

The C.J. Berne Residence is located at 2023 Redcliff Street in the Moreno Highlands neighborhood of Silver Lake.

The Silver Lake house designed for Nimrod Erez and Isaac Eisenberg is the transformation of an existing two story 1903 residence into a three story house, with a separate lower level rental unit. I learned about the house thanks to Stan Monahan, who lives n the rental unit on the lower level.

The redesign takes advantage of hilltop views by creating three outside spaces: an upper level kitchen patio facing the street, an upper level deck toward the garden, and a roof deck. The upper level patio serves as an extension of the kitchen, an outside room framing the view of the downtown Los Angeles skyline.

The Master Bedroom and Living Room access the garden deck, with views towards Griffith Park, Hollywood, Century City and the entire Wilshire corridor, and the roof deck provides 360º views toward downtown and the Pacific Ocean .

A main design element is the staircase, which serves as a chimney to provide natural vertical ventilation, leading from the lower level entry porch to the upper level kitchen and dining room and finally to the roof deck.

The subfloors and most wall studs of the original 1903 residence were reused and reclaimed, the brick footings were used for landscaping and walkways. Located at 827 N. La Fayette Park Place in the Silver Lake Neighborhood of Los Angeles

Architect A.C. Munson designed the house for Jack Brick in 1965. The only reference I could find for A.C. Munson was in the January 1913 Edition of the publication "The Architect and Engineer of California". A.C. Munson is mentioned as being on the organizing committee for the Fourth Annual Architectural Exhibition in Los Angeles, "under the auspices of the Architectural League of the Pacific Coast." Also serving on the committee were Myron Hunt and Arthur R. Kelly. Could it be that the same A.C. Munson designed the Brick House some 52 years later? It certainly is in the realm of possibility. The Brick House is located at 2030 Keilworth Avenue in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles. The house is currently on the market (June 2011) and priced at $1,200,000.

I have passed by this house hundreds of times, taking note of its special curb appeal. While visiting with Architect Barry Milofsky recently, I was picking his brain about some of the cool houses in Silver Lake that I was unsure of their heritage, this being one of them. It came as a bit of surprise when I learned that the architect was Milofsky himself.

Barry promised to give me the details (soon) on how he and the owners collaborated on the design, but for now, I couldn't resist publishing a "sneak preview". The Tansey House is located at 2120 Rockford Road in Silver Lake.

Architect Sean Briski’s 2006 personal residence in Silver Lake follows a Los Angeles tradition of architectural experimentation. Rejecting the current fashion in architecture, described by the architect as “warmed-over Modernism”, the house explores the use of new and recycled materials in unconventional ways: Truck tire treads, left behind by big rigs and salvaged from the freeway, and foam packing materials are sandwiched between panels of glass, dimming the sunlight on the western wall. Roll the lounge chairs away and you’re in the middle of a basketball court; with three basketball hoops mounted on the loft wall. Unfinished concrete walls, exposed trusses and I-beams give the house a solid, industrial look.
The house is built on four levels with all rooms having views of Mt. Baldy. The garage and a separate studio apartment are located on the top level, ideal for a home office. The second level consists of two bedrooms separated by a full bath and an open loft, which overlooks the main floor. The two-story, main floor is an open floor plan with living, dining, kitchen and family room. A large, tri-fold window and balconies provide fresh air and bring the outdoors in. A movable wall separates a private conversation area and built-in desk from the living room/activity space. On the lower level, a Master Bedroom with en suite bath and fabulous outdoor room complete the picture.
The outdoor areas feature a large, flat yard, lush landscaping, shaded seating and barbeque areas, drought-resistant native plants, automatic sprinklers, large garden shed and a rainwater collection container.
If all this sounds complex, it is! This unique house must be seen to be appreciated. NOTE: The house went on the market on May 6, 2011 and was in escrow on May 8, 2011.

Stylish contemporary design by Architect Dana Taylor in 1992; his girlfriend, Kareme Roseme colloborated on the design. Apparently the couple had a parting of the ways; the current owners purchased the home from Roseme as the project was being completed. The "X" house refers to the tensioner cables that form a two-story "x" on the windows of the front facade. Located at 2262 Panorama Terrace in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles.

At the age of 64, Frank Parmelee retired from his position as President of the Parmellee Omnibus and Transfer Company in Chicago, and move to the sunnier climes of Los Angeles. In 1911, he purchased the entire southernly portion of the Elevado street property (with approximately 521 feet of frontage) and commisioned architect Franklin T. Kegley to design a home for he and his wife Meroe C. Parmelee. Kegley designed the home in ta grand Tudor Revival style, with five bedrooms, four bathrooms and (at least) three fireplaces; (that I remember, one a Batchelder, from a recent visit), and over 5000 sq. ft. of living space. Over time, parts of the property were sold off, resulting in the current 18,905 sq. ft. of land. The Parmelees later moved to the Ambassador Hotel, where Mr. Parmelee passed away on November 30, 1921.

One of Silver Lake's largest estates at 11,743 square feet on a lot of 82,764 square feet. This huge residence has a storied history, culminating in the development of the Hathaway Estates, a planned subdivision within Silver Lake. The house was built in 1923 and has a commanding 360 Degree View atop one of Silver Lake's highest hills. The house is built entirely of reinforced concrete; there is not one stick of wood in its structure. Mr. Hathaway apparently had a great fear of fire, and did not want his house burning down! It was recently (September 2004) on the market for $3,250,000. The house is located at 1809 Apex Avenue in Silver Lake.

The Becker House marks a divergence of style for Architect Gregory Ain. Instead of the usual right angles, Ain brings a touch of the Streamline Moderne with curved walls along the upper corners and garden walls. The result is not only pleasing to the eye; it demonstrates the architect's detachment from the expression of any particular style.

According to Architect Barry Milofsky, who purchased the house in December 2003, 'the Beckers wanted a 'party house', with access to a roof deck. There was orignially an open patio behind a privacy wall at the street level, and a narrow deck on the east side in back of the garage and at the lower level where the dining room was located. A dumbwaiter was installed to bring food from the kitchen at the lower level. A second owner enclosed the deck behind the garage. The third owners, Roy and Delores Dundas, purchased the house in 1960; althought they would have preferred the mosque-style house next door but couldn't afford the additional $2,000 asking price,' he said.

Crowning the top of one of Silver Lake's steepest streets, the Jones Residence is dramatic and appealing, very much in the spirit of John Lautner. It's not surprising, given the background of the architects. Frank Escher grew up in and studied Architecture at the ETH (Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule) Zürich. He is the editor of the monograph 'John Lautner, Architect,” serves on the Board of Directors of the John Lautner Foundation, and has lectured extensively on Lautner’s work in the United States and abroad. Mr. Escher has served as president, and is currently on the advisory board, of the Los Angeles Forum for Architecture and Urban Design.

Architect Harwell Hamilton Harris stands apart from the major architecture work of his time. Unlike his contempoaries, enamored with the in-fashion 'machine' International Style, Harris had a love affair with wood throughout his long, distinguished career.

The Hopmans House, located at 1727 N. Dillon Street in Silver Lake is an excellent example of his organic, woodsy style.

A Beaux-Arts Masterpiece c. 1927. Popularized by the great classical architects of the time (like Paul Williams and Irving Gill), Mediterranean and Spanish style mansions were all the rage of the rich and famous of the period. Not much is known about the builder, however, it is said, that he hoped that in building this fine mansion others would follow suit. It must have been a little more than disappointing to realize the result. The house, located on Mayberry Street, is set in a neighborhood characterized by modest California bungalows, and yet it makes a statement. It is considered the 'Crown Jewel' of Mayberry Heights.

Silver Ridge Avenue has some of the most storied monuments to Modernist architecture to be found in the world, including works by Harwell Hamilton Harris, Rudolph Schindler, J.R. Davidson and Allyn E. Morris. Visiting there recently, I was struck by a number of exciting new architectural projects being infilled in a few of the steep, remaining hillside lots, and some interesting remodels.

A real eye-catcher is this stunning architectural statement at 2358 Silver Ridge. Designed by Sean Briski, Principal of the architectural firm ChromaAD, Briski has created something very special as the accompanying photos will attest.

The exterior of the house is a series of experiments in wall construction that have been organized into a composition. The screen wall at the stair is made up of tire 'alligators' sandwiched between panels of glass. The light-transmitting wall panel in the living room is made with packing peanuts laid between twin wall lexan.

large ash tree envelopes the house, creating a microclimate. A partially concealed post and beam structure modulates the exterior and allows openings to span from floor to ceiling. The second story bears on thins stainless steel columns and cantilevers over a concrete deck, which in turn cantilevers over the slope. For a remodel of their home, Daniel Brauer and James Drobka selected the architectural firm Bardwell Case & Associates to replace a distressed 'bootleg' addition over the garage and rebuild the foundation. The result is a finely-tuned expression of Modernism that resonates with Silver Lake's architectural heritage. Stephen Bardwell was the lead architect on the project, completed in 2004. The addition. dubbed the 'Tiki Room', houses the owner's extensive collection of Tikis, Polynesian gods or images in stone or wood.

The Brauer-Drobka Residence is located at 3106 Berkeley Circle in Silver Lake.

Elizabeth Bougart-Sharkov, Chair of the Silver Lake Urban Design & Preservation Committee, recently informed that this unassuming duplex located at 944 Maltman Avenue is indeed the work of a young Rudolf Shindler! 'During the course of research and digging through history and left-intact documents, we made this tremendous discovery. It was designed and built according to his plans', an ecstatic Ms. Bougart-Sharkov exclaimed, 'It was a stepping stone in terms of using cast concrete as a structural and architectural element.'

The Anastasia & Luby Bubeshko Apartments designed by Rudolph Schindler. Garnering world acclaim, the building was featured in the MOCA Schindler Retrospective as one of the architect's best-known multi-family designs. Located at the Southeast corner of Lyric Avenue and Griffith Park Blvd., these much-photographed apartments have great indoor/outdoor flow with their oversize roof terraces. The Mayan style blocks add a dramatic element.

As a history buff, I have often wondered when the very first houses in Silver Lake were built. While I can't be absolutely sure, the best information I have at present is that the first homes in Silver Lake on record appear to have been built in the late 1890s.

Coronado Terrace, on the edge of Echo Park, has the oldest houses still standing in Silver Lake. The house at 832 Coronado Terrace is perhaps the best preserved. Built in 1895, it retains much vintage character.

The latest 'rescue and restore' project by the design team of Guy & Karen Vidal, the 'Elevado de Castillo' represents the team's 20th completed project in the Silver Lake/Echo Park communities. A severly neglected Spanish fourplex originally built in 1925, Karen fell in love with the architectural beauty of the octagonal turret, the tall ceilings and arched entryways, sparking her restoration-oriented imagination. The building was considered a 'tear-down' by everyone who was considering buying it, except the Vidals, who value preservation and restoration over the quick buck.

The Glendale/Hyperion Viaduct, popularly known as the Hyperion Bridge, was completed in June 1927. It was built by Salih Brothers, Contractors, during the term of George E. Cryer, Mayor of the City of Los Angeles. During its construction, H.J. McGuire was President of the Board of Public Works and Merrill Butler served as the Engineer of Bridges. It spans the Los Angeles River between Atwater Village and Silver Lake and Los Feliz. This picture was taken from the eastern (Atwater Village) side.

I had the privilege of visiting this lovely home in my capacity as photographer for the CSSLR 2006 Home Tour, 'Silver Lake Modernism- Then & Now'. Up until the assignment, I had only the opportunity to admire the house from the street and from what I had read in architecture books. My curiosity was hightened with the purchase of Barbara Bestor's new book (2006) entitled, 'Bohemian Modern: Living in Silver Lake' which features the Hansen House. Fashion Designer, Kirk Nozaki, who purchased the home in 1992 was kind enough to give me a tour of the home and allow me to share these photographs with you.

Up until about 1920 most of the Spanish style architecture found in Southern California could be defined as 'Mission Revival' or 'Pueblo Revival'. The Panama-Pacific Exposition buildings in San Diego, designed by Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue in 1915 created an explosion of interest in a more elaborate style of Spanish architecture that lasted up until the United States entered WWII. The Pedroarena House, designed for Carolina Pedroarena by Architect Henry Grey in 1940 is characteristic of the more elaborate Spanish Colonial Revival Style, borrowing details of Moorish and Renaissance inspiration. Dramatic details include complex roof forms of varying heights; lacy gates and balconies; hand-painted inlaid tiles and an enclosed courtyard with fountain, creating a theatrical effect found in great favor during the period.

Designed in the Pskov style of 12-13th century northern Russia. The first Russian Orthodox church in Los Angeles, it was founded by a congregation with few wealthy members, many of whom had served as officers in the Russian army and navy who fled Russia in the choas following the Russian Revolution and World War I.

In 1960, the church was enlarged to almost double its size with designs by B.A. Filiippov. In 1971 it was designated a cathedral by the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church in America. The same year, architect S.N. Koschin designed a new building to house the Chapel of St. Herman of Alaska, a school building and sacristy.

The Cathedral is located at 650 Micheltorena Street.

Architect Ray V. Otero selected a hillside lot in Silver Lake affording dramatic city views and built this lovely post and beam for his personal residence in 1961. Rudolph Schindler designed Manola Court for his client, artist/designer Herman Sachs over a 14-year period. They are an excellent example of Schindler's abstract style. Located at 1811-1830 Edgecliffe Drive. The entire complex of sixteen residences 'set within hilliside gardens on three adjacent street-to-street parcels' was listed for sale (July 2008) for $3M. A dramatic 2-story owner's loft connects directly to the original studio.

I formerly reported that this home was designed by Kiyohara and Moffit, based upon records at the Los Angeles Department of Building & Safety, and only recently received this correction. One of the nine houses comprising the 'Neutra Colony' built incrementally between 1948 and 1961. The Sokol house was the first of the group and is distinctively different from the others. It is also one of the largest of the group, being 2382 square feet. The colony was designed as a 'posturing group' that is, 'the grouping of a team in cooperative action, where each individual posture complements the others and no soulless, mere side-by-side prevails.' The result is a 'community with a sense of sensual, animated tranquility, of accomplished sophistication rendered simply by mature hands. Each house is unique.'

The home had the unmistakeable quality of a Kesling Home: small but with elegant style. And of course it was in the area where there are about a half dozen or so surviving Keslings. He even showed me some fine old photographs taken by the great Julius Shulman of the house, and were given to the owner by Mr. Shulman.

A standing-room-only crowd greeted Dr. Raymond Richard Neutra, youngest son of architect Richard Neutra and his wife Peggy Bauhus on Saturday, February 13th as the two presented “From Vienna to Silver Lake: Why Richard and Dione Neutra decided to be Americans” in a lecture at the new Silver Lake Library.

Dr. Neutra, with wife Peggy Bauhaus read from letters written by his parents, during the time that his father first came to America to explore its possibilities, while his young bride stayed home in Vienna. Afterwards, participants were invited to tour the VDL Research House. Architect Dion Neutra gave a fine lecture on the house that he and his brothers called home during their youth.

The VDL Research House, located in Silver Lake, is a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. The house was bequeathed to California Polytechnic University at Pomona after Richard and Dione’s deaths. It is administered by the Cal Poly Foundation, and managed by the College of Environmental Design.

I had the pleasure of meeting Alan Hess recently at the iconic Bob's Big Boy Coffee Shop in Toluca Lake. Hess has written extensively about Mid-Century architecture, including the book "Googie Redux". He was kind enough to autograph the book for me, along with his recently published work, "Forgotten Modern". Hess contributed to my research on the work of Architect Allyn E. Morris, specifically the "Lago Vista" condominium complex overlooking Echo Park Lake, which was featured in the Los Angeles Times as "Home of the Week" on January 3, 2010.

Dr. Raymond Richard Neutra, youngest son of architect Richard Neutra will present 'From Vienna to Silver Lake: Why Richard and Dione Neutra decided to be Americans' in a lecture at the new Silver Lake Library, February 13, 2010.

Dr. Neutra, with wife Peggy Bauhaus will read from letters written by his parents, beginning at 2 p.m.. Afterwards, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Neutra will lead a tour of the VDL Research House nearby. There is a $10 fee for the tour; the lecture is free.

Dr. Neutra is Chief Emeritus of the Division of Environmental and Occupational Disease Control, California Department of Public Health. He previously taught medical epidemology at Harvard University, UCLA and UC Berkeley. Since retiring in 2007, he has devoted his energies to the restoration and preservation of the VDL Research House. The experimental house and compound, where the Neutra family grew up, is a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. It was bequethed to California Polytechnic Univesity at Pomona after the elder Neutra and his wife Dione died. The house is managed by the school's College of Environmental Design.

In recent years, Dr. Neutra has volunteered to help Cal Poly in fundraising for the restoration and reprogamming of the compound 'out of a sense of gratitude to my parents, who provided me with a sense of social responisibility. They provided a culturally rich home environment that in turn formed the foundation for a career in public health.', he said. (Raymond's architect and brother Dion, who took over the Neutra architectural practice after their father's death, is a consultant on the restoration project).

Beginning in February 2010, the Silver Lake Public Library will present a series of programs that will provide information and guidance to local residents about various different aspects of sustainable living. The Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony dedicating the new SILVER LAKE Library was a very special affair with not only a huge contingent of neighbors but a virtual "Who's Who" of public officials, including Mayor Antonio Villaragosa, City Council President Eric Garcetti, District 4 Councilmember Tom LaBonge, Dr. Tyree Wieder, President, Board of Library Commissioners; Cynthia Ruiz, President, L.A. Board of Public Works, City Librarian Martin Gomez; and Friends of Silver Lake Library President Michael Saint-Onge.

The new library is the city's 72nd branch and the first to have a state-of-the-art automated materials handling system, using an automated conveyor belt, the system automatically checks in and sorts materials. Self-checkout starions allow patrons to check out multiple items and pay fees by cash or credit card.

The building was designed by the architectural firm Milofsky, Michali & Cox (M2A Architects); the design pays tribute to Silver Lake's Modernist architectural heritage.

Martin Schall, creator of "You-Are-Here", the now famous website that explores the architecture of our fair city (Los Angeles), arrives a little later this year (his usual fall tour takes place in October). After a few days staying at Dominic's in Chinatown, he'll be out house guest in Los Feliz!

My dad, John Locke, moved our family from Portland, OR in 1957, to accept a position as Chief Engineer at Van de Kamp's Holland-Dutch Bakery. We lived for a few months at a motel along Riverside Drive (near the Mulholland Fountain) while we waited for our house to close (in the Rossmoyne neighborhood). Filmmaker ERIC BRICKER was presented with the Julius Shulman Communication Award at Woodbury University, Sunday, October 11, 2009. The award was presented by LILY TOMLIN, who received the award in 2007. Bricker devoted seven years of his life to making the film, "VISUAL ACOUSTICS: The Modernism of Julius Shulman". The film documents the great photographer and how his images portrayed and promoted the idealistic "California Lifestyle". I was deeply honored to be one of the presenters at the ceremony, along with Michael Stern and Jonathan Weedman.

The beloved photographer died in July 2009, just a few months short of his 99th birthday (10-10-1910). Pictured are members of the cast and crew, including Shulman's daughter Judy McKee (on the left) and Julius Shulman standing with Eric Bricker on the far right. The photo was taken earlier at the Landmark Theater at an early showing of the film.

I met Ryan-Ainslie this morning at his downtown hotel. While the GPS system on my Toyota Siena mysteriously decided to stop working, I worried about how we would find our way. Our itinerary took us to the C.E. KUSTOR RESIDENCE in West Adams, an eclectic Victorian/Craftsman/Shingle house designed by Parkinson in about 1911 (and recently purchased by my friends ROB & JENNY WEI); then on to WOODACRES, the Parkinson family home in Santa Monica. We were met at the Parkinson Estate by DRU ALPHSON, (husband Howard was taking a nap). The Alphsons are only the second owners of the fabulous property that the Parkinsons called "home".

After a few precious hours at Woodacres, we traveled across town to FOREST LAWN in Glendale, to visit the PARKINSON crypt in the GREAT MAUSOLEUM; the Master Architect' final resting place.

We topped off the day with margaritas at the LOCKE home in Los Feliz, and after a quick trip to a couple of Frank Lloyd Wright masterpieces in the neighborhood (the Ennis & Hollyhock Houses), we dropped Jeremy at the HOTEL CECIL in downtown Los Angeles.

We'll meet up again on Sunday at the SALON OF THE SPIRITUALLY CREATIVE LIFE, hosted by Carol & Richard King before dropping Jeremy off at LAX for the return trip to Birmingham (England). It's been a real privelege meeting a special young film maker who has a keen interest in L.A.!

Ted Kennedy: He was very special

During last fall's presidential campaign, I heard that Sen. Kennedy was going to speak at a rally at East Los Angeles College, so I packed my camera and headed over to the campus. There he was, in the flesh, one of the many so-called liberals I had learned to dislike as a result of my upbringing in conservative Glendale (CA). Now, after a long education process, I could see up-close-and-personal, one of our real American heroes! Kennedy was speaking to the large bilingual crowd, encouraging them with the words, "Si se puede!" (Yes We Can!) It was a great moment, one that I will long remember.

Goodbye, Uncle Julius!

Learning of Julius Shulman's death last week came as a big shock: I knew his health had been declining in recent weeks; a denied request to visit alerted me to the situation. We had become friends over the past five years; after meeting him at the Eagle Rock Playground in April 2004, I found myself in his studio just a few days later.

Over the years, I returned to the studio many times, bringing along friends and admirers. Each visit offered fresh revelation and insight, a bit of wit and wisdom that would bring perspective, a "teaching moment" from a master teacher. Along the way, I met many of his friends and admirers, many would become my friends too, a bond forged by our mutual admiration; we were all part of his family. He taught me many life lessons, the greatest by example: treating everyone with dignity no matter their station in life. I will greatly miss him!

3rd Phase of Silver Lake's "Art Cans" Are In!

The 3rd Phase of Silver Lake's famed "Art Cans Project" unfolded this past Sunday, June 7, 2009 as the first "Art Can" adoptions were delivered, first to Trader Joe's Silver Lake, then off to Prestige Motors on Silver Lake Blvd., followed by the placement of a can at the Silver Lake Dog Park.

Here's a few photos that I enjoyed taking at the event; more to come and more details next week, as the second "leg" of adoptions will be delivered on June 14th. Look for updates next week.

Silver Lake Improvement Association Celebrates 20 Years

I had the good fortune to attend the Annual Meeting of the Silver Lake Improvement Association last evening, held at Silver Lake's Holy Virgin Mary Russian Orthodox Cathedral. SLIA President Genelle LeVin has done an outstanding job in revitalizing the organization; a near-capacity crowd was on hand to celebrate the organizations' 20th anniversary.

Headline speakers, Los Angeles Council Member Tom LaBonge (CD-4) and Council President Eric Garcetti (CD-13)extolled the crowd for their community activism, and reported on council matters, especially the effects of the budget crisis. Long-time SLIA Board Member Ruth Faydich was honored for serving the organization for 17 years as the group's Treasurer.

A highlight of the evening, Councilmember LaBonge led the crowd in singing "Happy Birthday" to long-time community activist Lucy Jones, who turns 92 this month.

Artist Sam Maloof Mourned

Earlier this year (April 3 2008), my wife, Donna Jean and I hopped on a bus along with members of the Griffith Park Adult Community Center to visit Woodcarver/Artist Sam Maloof at his home and studio. It was my first exposure to the famed craftsman, who passed away this past Thursday, May 21, 2009 at his home in Alta Loma. It was an experience I will never forget. The Artist devoted his life to his craft, turning out some of the most beautiful and timeless pieces of furniture imaginable. What a joy and priveledge it was to meet Maloof and his wife Beverly personally, a great artist who never lost the common touch. Silver Lake's "Art Cans" to be Installed on June 7, 2009!

"The next round of Silver Lake's famed "Art Cans" are almost here!", Project Coordinator Noah Stein announced on May 21st. The concrete trash receptacles are inset with mosaic panels designed by local artists working hand-in-hand with local community groups. The colorful mosaic panels serve a dual purpose of encouraging public art and a cleaver way of taking care of trash in our commercial corridors.

The concrete trash cans are set to be delivered on Wednesday, May 27; the panel installations will begin on Sunday, June 27,2009, starting at 8:30 a.m on Hyperion Avenue. Join the fun beginning about 9 a.m. in front of Trader Joe's where the first can will be installed. The action moves to Silver Lake Dog Park next, before moving on to other installations along Silver Lake Blvd.

After 30+ Years, It's Time to Say "Good-bye"

It's time to say "Good-bye" to John Mason and Dave Gy, fixtures in the Silver Lake community for more than thirty years. The pair have decided to leave Silver Lake for "greener pastures" and have purchase a home in the desert community of Palm Springs.

The couple have been active members of the Sanborn-Venango Community Group, in what I described in one of my articles written for the Los Feliz Ledger as one of the "best neighborhoods in Silver Lake You've Never Heard of". John and Dave have been active in their little pocket of Silver Lake for decades, banding together with their neighbors to fight gang activity and improve the community. Real pioneers in my book!

Over the years, we formed a friendship based upon our love for our neighborhood.
About a year ago, they made the decision to sell their home on Venango Avenue and move to a new home in Palm Springs. We have had the pleasure of listing their home for sale; it's due to close this coming Thursday, April 9, 2009. It's a bittersweet time, we have grown to love these guys and will hate to see them go, but we wish them well in their new surroundings in the desert!

This past week (March 9-15, 2009), I had the joy of seeing Julius Shulman on two occasions; visiting him at his home in the Hollywood Hills, and on Sunday, March 15th attending an "Ides of March Scotch-Tasting Bacchanal" at the home of (L.A. Magazine Executive Editor) Mary Melton and her husband Ed Leibowitz in Eagle Rock.

Apparently Julius has been wanting to do this for years, according to our hosts. For the occasion, they brought in one of the city's top Scotch experts from the Seven Grand bar in downtown Los Angeles. Guests mingled around the pool, sampling Middle Eastern delicacies before adjourning to the family room for the Scotch-tasting. I had no idea there was such a variety of unique single malt Scotch whiskeys! Afterwards, we were invited to stay for dessert, a medley of three cakes, spelling out the words, "All Hail Julius".

Among the guests were many old friends we originally met through Julius, including Designer Ron Fields, Woodbury University's Rose Nielsen, L.A. Magazine's Chris Nichols and his lovely wife, Charlene, Chris Alexander from the Getty Research Institute, Linda Dishman, Executive Director of the Los Angeles Conservancy, Jim Heimann, Executive Editor of Taschen America (Julius' publisher) and his wife Rolleen, Neutra Scholar Barbara Lamprecht, our neighbor Guy Vidal (DesignVidal) and of course, Julius' daughter, Judy McKee. Los Angeles City Councilmember Tom LaBonge dropped in for a "Hail Julius" salute.

Besides our hosts, we were introduced to Michael Stern from Palm Springs (Michael hosted last year's Palm Springs Modernism event) and Craig Krull, owner of the gallery in Santa Monica that exhibits Julius' work.

During the six years Donna Jean and I lived in Silver Lake, we became friends with many of our neighbors, including Guy & Karen Vidal (DesignVidal) and their two beautiful children, Ginger and Levi. The Vidals invited us to attend a reception for Glass Artist Andrew Thompson held at Blackman Cruz in Hollywood on May 5, 2009. We had the privelege of meeting the artist and many of his friends. Thompson has masterfully "altered the perception of glass designed as fine art. His exploration of complex technique incorporated with organic design creates the ultimate synergy", according to Adam Cruz, the gallery's owner.

Located in the old PROBE Night Club (836 N. Highland Avenue in Hollywood, L.A.s equivelant of Studio 54), the Blackman Cruz showrooms are on many levels, and something special to experience. Besides Andrew Thompson's beautiful art glass (on nearly every conceivable surface), there are many fascinating one-of-a-kind collectable objects to enjoy.

Silver Lake's "Art Cans" Pre-Installation Exhibit at M&A

On Sunday, February 22, 2009, Materials & Applications in Silver Lake hosted a pre-installation exhibition of the "Art-Can Project", sponsored by the Beautification Committee of the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council. The "Art- Cans" are concrete trash cans that have beautiful mosaic panels designed by local artists.

Artists Julie Bagish, Yuriko Etue and Tabitha Fronk are veterans of the project. Julie's work, "Four Seasons of William Crite" honored Crite, a brilliant artist and fellow art-can contributor. She wrote and read a lovely poem dedicating her work to his memory. The "Path Pals" of the CSSLR (Comittee to Save Silver Lake's Reservoirs) also contributed an art can "The Reservoir Pathways", working with Bagish. CSSLR veterans Lori Oddino and Carla Lazzareschi were on hand for the ceremony. The can will be installed in front of Monkey House Toys on Silver Lake Blvd.

Artist Yuriko Etue has contributed to the "Art Can Project" in each of its three installations. Her current contribution, "Forever Beginning" is reminiscent of her earlier work. Tabitha Fronk created "Cats & Butterflies- for Lulu", working with Silver Lake Kids and an untitled art can with the help of Calderons Silver Lake Kids. Artist Lorraine Heitzman, a newcomer to the project, worked with Girl Scout Troup 730 and created "It's a Dog's Life". The art can will be installed at Silver Lake Dog Park; the Silver Lake Dog Park Association adopted the can.

I am extremely proud of these art cans! As Founder of the Silver Lake Beautification Committee, I would like to personally thank Noah Stein Project Coordinator and Laura Dwan Project Developer/Coordinator, who have kept the project alive. It takes a huge amount of (volunteer) time to bring such projects to completion.

Silver Lake's "Villa Togneri" is L.A. Times "Home of the Week"

The "Villa Togneri", a Classic Mediterranean Villa designed by I. Palombo in 1927 in Silver Lake was recognized as the "Home of the Week" in the Los Angeles Times on January 4, 2008. The Villa has been in the Togneri Family for more than 60 years. To visit the property is to take a step back in time; virtually nothing has changed since the villa was first built. Rembembering Yvon Docker Lincoln 1921-2008

Yvon Docker Lincoln arrived in Los Angeles when she was barely 6 onths old, coming with her parents Mytris Evalina Burns and Malcolm Docker Lincoln from Tucson, Arizona. She remained ni Southern California the rest of her life.

During WWII, she served as an air raid warden and as a U.S. Naval truck driver, building landing strips. Peacetime work was primarily in transportation, especially transcontinental truckign of heavy machinery and later, air freight. She was the first woman Western Regional Vice President of Delta Nu Alpha, a national transportation society. An activist in Silver Lake, her home community, Yvon, in retirement was also a volunteer and contributor to many non-profit organizations. Yvon's greatest gift was making friends and they are legion.

In a nursing home with failing health for the past three years, she succumbed to cancer on November 26, 2008. She is survived by her companion, Lucile Jones and her cousin Laura Burns. UCLA Donated Body Program accepted her remains and there will be no services pursuant to her wishes. Those wanting to remember her may do so by making a new friend, as she would, or by giving to her favorite charity, St. Vincent Meals on Wheels, c/o St. Vincent Foundation, 2222 Ocean View Avenue, Suite 114, Los Angeles, CA 90057.

Silver Lakers Dedicate the New Pathway Circumventing SL Reservoir

Saturday, December 20, 2008 marked an historic happening in Silver Lake, the Ribbon-cutting ceremony dedicating the pathway circling Silver Lake Reservoir. A host of dignitaries, neighbors and reservoir advocates were on hand for the long-awaited path to finally open.

I arrived just before 10 a.m., and already there were a lot of familiar faces in the crowd. I spotted Bea Gold, along with L.A. Councilmembers Tom LaBonge and Council President Eric Garcetti, who were definitely pumped for the occasion. Bea was greeting CA. Assemblymember Paul Krekorian (43rd Dist.) while LaBonge was introducing Assemblymember Curran Price (51st Dist.).

Fine speeches by Eric Garcetti and Tom LaBonge were followed by addresses from Paul Krekorian, LADWP CEO H. David Nahai, L.A. City Engineer Gary Moore, Board of Public Works Board Member Julie Gutman and Committee to Save Silver Lake's Reservoirs President Shelley Marks. It was a special day for many of us who have been advocating for Silver Lake's open reservoirs.
